Shaldon
Shaldon is a village on the south bank of the Teign estuary in south Devon, facing Teignmouth. It is small, Georgian in the middle, and known for cottages, a green, and a beach that you reach by walking through the Ness, a headland tunnel that comes out at Ness Cove. The river side has a shore of its own. The sea side is the cove. They are different swims.
The village is the quiet alternative to the English Riviera resorts. You come here to walk, to cross the river, and to sit in a pub. You do not come here for a nightclub or a conference hotel. Torquay is down the coast if that is what you wanted and you booked the wrong place.
The ferry and the beaches
A passenger ferry runs between Shaldon and Teignmouth. It is a small boat, not a car ferry, and it is the best way to use both places in one day. Check the tide and the timetable on the day. The road alternative is the bridge upstream, which is fine in a car and a long walk on foot. Ness Cove is the photographed beach. It is not large, and at a high tide it is smaller still. The path through the tunnel is the access. If you need a long sandy strand, Teignmouth's town beach is the one across the water.
Where to stay
Rooms in Shaldon are cottages, a few inns and bed and breakfasts. There are not many of them, so a summer weekend needs a booking. Staying in the village means you walk home after dinner. Staying in Teignmouth means more choice of rooms and restaurants, and a ferry ride if you want the village in the daytime. Holiday parks are not the character of this side of the river.
Parking is village parking: limited, and not designed for a coach. If you are driving, ask the host where to put the car before you arrive on a Saturday.
Around the estuary
Teignmouth has the pier, the larger beach and the station. Trains do not stop in Shaldon. You use Teignmouth station, on the Riviera line, and the ferry or a taxi. Dawlish is the next resort north. Inland, the Teign valley is a route towards Dartmoor, covered more broadly on the Devon page. Shaldon itself is a one-village stay. That is the recommendation, not a limitation to apologise for.
