Hook, Hampshire
Hook is a large village in north-east Hampshire, in the district of Hart. It sits beside the A30, just north of junction 5 of the M3, about six miles east of Basingstoke. It is not a resort, and it does not pretend to be one. People stay here because the station is useful, because they are breaking a drive to the south-west, or because they have something to do in this part of Hampshire.
The village grew with the railway and later with people who work along the M3. There is a high street of ordinary shops, pubs, and housing estates. What you will not find is a beach, a promenade or a queue for a castle. If that is the trip you wanted, continue to Bournemouth or Devon.
Why the station matters
Hook station is on the South Western Railway line from London Waterloo towards Basingstoke, Salisbury and Exeter. Waterloo is typically under an hour. That makes Hook a possible last night before a westbound drive, or a place to stay without taking a car into London. Trains are frequent enough for a day in the capital. They are not a tourist excursion in their own right.
Where to stay, honestly
Rooms in the village are mostly pubs and small guest houses. If you need a large hotel, a late check-in desk and more restaurants, Basingstoke is the neighbouring town with the bigger stock of rooms, a few miles west. Read the parking note. A village inn may have a handful of spaces and no arrangement with a public car park.
Day trips that are actually local include Basingstoke for shops and the Milestones museum, and Winchester, which is a short drive south and has the cathedral. Jane Austen's House at Chawton, near Alton, is a reasonable outing to the east if you are interested, not a reason to choose Hook by itself. Windsor and the south coast are longer journeys than they look once you hit the M3 in traffic.
Who it suits
Stay in Hook if you want a quiet night, a train to London, and an early start west. Do not stay in Hook if the holiday is the destination.
