Map of the United Kingdom, marking the Midlands

Towcester

Towcester is a small market town in south Northamptonshire. The Roman road Watling Street ran through it, and the A5 still does. The High Street is the town. There is no beach and no illusion of a resort. People stop here for the racecourse, for Silverstone, or because they want a market-town night between London and the Midlands.

The Roman settlement was called Lactodorum. You do not need the Latin to walk the town. What you notice now is a long main street, stone and brick buildings, and countryside immediately outside. It is a place you understand in an hour on foot, which is either exactly what you wanted or a sign you should be in Edinburgh.

The racecourse and the circuit

Towcester Racecourse is on the edge of town. Race days change the demand for rooms and for dinner, so check the fixture list before you assume a Tuesday is quiet. Silverstone, the motor-racing circuit, is a few miles south. A grand prix or a major meeting fills every inn in this part of Northamptonshire and a long way beyond it. If you are attending, book the room when you book the ticket. If you are not, those weekends are the ones to avoid unless you enjoy convoys.

Where to stay

Inns and small hotels in the town are the right scale. You can walk to dinner, which matters because the countryside around is not dense with restaurants. Larger chain hotels sit nearer the A43 and the main roads. They suit an early start for the circuit and a late arrival. They are less pleasant if the point of the trip was the High Street. Ask whether breakfast is included and whether the car park is on site. Both answers vary on a race week.

Practical visiting

Towcester is a driving town. The nearest railway stations are elsewhere, including Northampton and Milton Keynes, so a train-only trip is clumsy. By car it is close to the A43, with the M1 to the east and the M40 to the south-west. A day here pairs naturally with a walk in the countryside or a look at a nearby estate, not with a list of twenty attractions. For a Hampshire village that does have a London railway station, see Hook. For a garden city planned as a whole, see Welwyn Garden City.
